Structural Equation Modeling (SEM)

SEM was developed from econometrics and encompasses a family of models. It is distinguished by 2 characteristics:

  1. Estimation of multiple and interrelated dependence relationships
  2. The ability to represent unobserved concepts in these relationships and account for measurement error in the estimation process.

It's objectives are to:

  • Understand the role of causal relationships in statistical analysis
  • Represent a series of causal relationships in a path diagram
  • Translate a path diagram into a set of equations for estimation
  • Appreciate the role and influence of a variable’s measurement properties on the results of a statistical analysis.
